Chirps From Robin

October 2025

This month’s Psalm readings are Psalms 109-119. Since 119 is Soooo long, we’ll be breaking it up into smaller sections on Facebook. It is the longest song/ chapter in the Bible. Psalm 119 is unique in how it is presented in our Bibles; I thought you might like to know what all the little words before each section means.

Actually, they are not words but the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. There are 22 letters in all, hence 22 sections to the Psalm. Each section’s title is a Hebrew letter. Within each section, there are eight verses. Each verse begins with that same Hebrew letter. This makes this song an acrostic. There are some other Psalms that are an acrostic with each verse starting with the Hebrew letters in alphabetical order. This poetic structure was used to aid in memorization. Personal copies of the Scriptures were not a thing so they memorized His Word. In church camp I learned an acrostic definition for Grace: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.

An old German version of the Bible puts the following description at the beginning of Psalm 119: “This is the Christian’s Golden ABC’s of the praise, love, power, and use of the Word of God.” The focus of the psalm is on the law of God. It praises the wondrous quality of God’s word. Nearly every verse mentions it in some way.

In my Bible notes it says the Psalm may have been written by “Ezra after the temple was rebuilt as a repetitive meditation on the beauty of God’s Word and how it helps us stay pure and grow in faith.” Also, it mentions that the Psalm’s theme is; “God’s Word is true and wonderful.” Stay true to God and his Word no matter how bad the world becomes. Obedience to God’s laws is the only way to achieve real happiness.

So, as we take our time to read through this Psalm, take note of what the Psalmist has to say about the Word of God.
